Professor Wendyl D’Souza is a neurologist, epilepsy specialist and epidemiologist with over twenty years of experience managing people with seizures, suspected seizures, epilepsy, and their mimickers.
He graduated in medicine from The University of Otago (MBChB,1988) and Master of Public Health (MPH, 1999). He completed his basic physician and specialty training in Neurology (FRACP, Melbourne 2001), further sub-specialty training in epilepsy at the Alfred & St Vincent’s Hospitals Melbourne (2002) along with a doctorate in epilepsy epidemiology from Massey University, NZ (PhD, 2009). He was Head of Epilepsy Services at the Alfred Hospital from 2002-2007. He is currently, Head of Epilepsy Services, Director of Neurology Advanced Training and Deputy Director of Neurology, in the Department of Medicine, St Vincent’s Hospital, The University of Melbourne.
He has a wide range of experience and expertise managing all aspects of care from adolescents to elderly people with epilepsy. He is an LGBTQ+ ally. His goal is to maximise the quality of life and independence of people living with epilepsy using, where needed, the latest emerging diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available. He has extensive experience in both the clinical and personal life journey impacts (education, driving, pregnancy, work, travel etc.) of new-onset seizures, the common inherited epilepsies, drug-resistant epilepsy, and epilepsy pre-surgical evaluation.
His current research focus is on the idiopathic generalised epilepsies, psychogenic non-epileptic attacks, real-world studies in antiseizure medications and devices, autoimmune epilepsies, and the utilization of national privacy preserving data linkage techniques to map and improve epilepsy-related health outcomes.
