Dr Lakshini Gunasekera is a consultant neurologist and headache specialist. She holds dual fellowships in general neurology and headache medicine. Her areas of expertise include headache diagnostics, and injectable/infusional treatments for migraine (including peripheral nerve blocks and Botox). She completed a Bachelor of Biomedicine majoring in immunology and subsequently completed the Doctor of Medicine – both through The University of Melbourne. She obtained her Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Adult Neurology after working across most of Victoria’s health networks – The Royal Melbourne Hospital (including Wangaratta, Horsham, Ballarat), Western Health, Barwon Health, Northern Health, St Vincent’s Health and Alfred Health.

Dr Gunasekera is also the Deputy Director of The Multidisciplinary Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc). At MAPrc, she pursues her research interests including the overlap between migraine and psychiatric conditions, impact of trauma on headaches, and hormonal influences on migraine (including menstrual migraine and menopausal migraine). She is actively involved in clinical research, medical teaching, formal mentoring and supervision of research students. In 2025, she was awarded a Victorian Government grant to investigate hormonal therapies for menstrual migraine. Her research to date has led to peer-reviewed publications and presentations at both national and international conferences.
